Cefinel®
Pharmacological properties
Ceftiofur is a third generation of cephalosporin antibiotic. It has a wide spectrum of bactericidal activity against gram-positive and gram-negative microorganisms, including strains producing β-lactamase, and certain anaerobic bacteria: Pasteurella haemolytica, Pasteurella multocida, Actinobacillus (Haemophilus) somnus, Fusobacterium necroforum, Bacteroides melaninogenicus, Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae, Pasteurella multocida, Streptococcus suis, Streptococcus zooepidemicus, Streptococcus equi, Staphylococcus ssp., Pasteurella ssp., Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus. Antibacterial action of ceftiofur is realized by inhibitionof synthesis of bacteria cell wallmechanism.
Administration
Cattle: For treatment of respiratory disease associated with Pasteurella (Mannheimia) haemolytica,Pasteurella multocida,Histophilus somni. For the treatment of acute bovine interdigital necrobacillosis associated with Fusobacterium necrophorum and Bacteroides melaninogenicus sensitive to ceftiofur.
Swine: For treatment of swine bacterial respiratory disease (swine bacterial pneumonia) associated with Actinobacillus (Haemophilus) pleuropneumoniae, Pasteurella multocida, Salmonella choleraesuis and Streptococcus suis sensitive to ceftiofur.
Horses: For treatment of respiratory infections in horses associated with Streptococcus zooepidemicus sensitive to ceftiofur.
Dogs: For treatment of polyarthritis, respiratory, urinary tract and skin disease associated with Escherichia coli and Proteus mirabilis sensitive to ceftiofur.
Day-old chicks and turkey: prevention of early mortality associated with E. Coli andStaphylococcus aureu sensitive to ceftiofur.
Dosage
One vial content should be diluted in 20 ml of sterile water for injections.1 ml of prepared solution contains 50 mg of sodium salt of ceftiofur.
Storage of prepared solution: 12 hours when stored in a dark place at temperature of 15 to 30 º C, 7 days when stored in refrigerator at 2 to 8 º C.
Frozen solution can be stored at temperature of -4 to -18 º C 8 weeks. Frozen solution is thawed at 37 º C and is not allowed to be freezedagain
Intramuscular administrationdosage:
cattle: 1.0 mL of solution per 50 kg body weight (1.0 mg ceftiofur per kg of body weight). No more than 15 mL of sterile solution should be injected into one injection site. Treatment should be repeated every 24 hours for a total of three to five times for treatment of respiratory disease, three times for treatment of interdigital necrobacillosis;
swine: 1 mL of solution per 16 kg body weight (3 mg ceftiofur per kg of body weight). Treatment should be repeated every 24 hours for a total of three treatments;
horses: 2.0 mg ceftiofur per kg of body weight (1.0 mL of solution per 25 kg body weight). Treatment should be repeated every 24 hours for a total of ten treatments. No more than 10 mL of sterile solution should be injected into one injection site. Treatments should be continued for 48 hours after symptoms have disappeared but no more than 10 days.
Subcutaneous administration dosage:
dogs: for treatment of respiratory disease – 0.6 mL of solution per 10 kg body weight (3.3 mg ceftiofur per kg of body weight) during 5 days; for treatment of urinary tract disease – 0.8 mL of solution per 10 kg body weight (4.4 mg ceftiofur per kg of body weight) during 8-10 days. For treatment of skin disease - 0.4-0.8 mL of solution per 10 kg body weight (2.2-4.4 mg ceftiofur per kg of body weight) during 10 days. For treatment of septic wounds – 0.6 mL of solution per 10 kg body weight (3.3 mg ceftiofur per kg of body weight) during 8-10 days. For treatment of polyarthritis – 0.8 mL of solution per 10 kg body weight (4.4 mg ceftiofur per kg of body weight) during 8 days. Dosage and duration of treatment depends on the severity of diseases;
day-old chicks: 0.2 mL of solution per head (in the neck). Before use a standard solution (50 mg / ml) should be diluted in such a way that 0.2 ml of the solution contains 0,08-0,2 mg of ceftiofur per chick;
day-old turkeys: 0.2 mL of solution per head (in the neck). Before use a standard solution (50 mg / ml) should be diluted in such a way that 0.2 ml of the solution contains 0,2-0,5 mg of ceftiofur per chick (1 mL of solution for 100 – 294 chicks).
Contraindications
The use is contraindicated for animals hypersensitive to ceftiofur or other β-lactam antibiotics.
Warnings
Drug is not prescribed to animals with individual intolerance to cephalosporins. Ceftiofur can cause allergic reactions of sensitive individuals. Persons with known hypersensitivity to penicillins and cephalosporins should avoid contact with the drug. Repeated or prolonged exposure of ceftiofur may cause sensitization. Avoid clothes, skin, eyes and mouth contact with the drug. In the case of accidental eye contact – rinse with water for 15 minutes. In the case of accidental skin contact – wash immediately with soap and water and change contaminated clothes. If allergic reaction is observed after contact with the drug (such as skin rash, hives, heavy breathing) – immediately call for medical attention.
Slaughter for use in food is permitted after 24 hours (cattle), 48 hours (swine), 21 day (chicks, turkey) after the last treatment with the drug. Excretion period for milk is 0 hours. Meat obtained before mentioned terms is utilized or fed to non-productive animals depending on veterinary doctor’s judgement.
